Is Everything Louder if the Image Disappears? @ The Projector

Presented by Asian Film Archive and The Projector, “Is Everything Louder If The Image Disappears?” is a film + sound experimental programme by Bani Haykal that examines the sonic component of scenography, featuring the rare Chinese silent film PAN SI DONG (1927).

Pan Si Dong (Heard), opens with a live scoring of the film by a sound ensemble facilitated by Aya Sekine, comprising of non-musicians/non-sound practitioners. The latter section Pan Si Dong (Unseen) is a deconstruction/reconstruction of the film, stripped of its visuals, featuring actors, Sangeetha Dorai, Farah Ong and Al-Matin Yatim, with live scoring by Jing Ng, weish and myself together with Aya Sekine’s sound ensemble.

The open workshop is a platform to generate discussions and offer ideas/interactions between practitioners of sound and audiences in order to bridge and bring closer the experience of “listening” to films. Artists involved in the project give insights to their process, methods and personal philosophies in organising the abstract nature of sound.
