Zai Tang

Sonorous Art & Design

Biography

zt_field_web

I was born in London (1984) and am now based in Singapore, where I practise as an artist, composer and sound designer. My body of work in both solo and collaborative modes, has grown out of my foundation in sound. Drawing influence from acoustic ecology, phenomenology and electronic & experimental music, my practise is built upon a belief that listening is an invaluable means of attuning to and forming deeper relationships with the world/s we inhabit and the experience of our own being. In my solo work I am currently responding to the question: What does it mean to listen to (and connect with) the voices of nature in a time of ecological crisis and mass extinction? To this end, I am experimenting with the abstraction and visualisation of the sounds of creatures I have recorded in wildlife-rich habitats under threat in Singapore. Once abstracted from their original state these sonorities are combined with other elements – drawing, animation, projection and / or performance – to create immersive and reflexive experiences that explore notions of awareness and connectivity between the human and the nonhuman.I obtained my BA in Creative Music Technology from Bath Spa University (2003-2006) and received a Post-Graduate Professional Development Award from AHRC to study MA Digital Arts at Camberwell College of Arts (2007-2009). During this period I also completed the New Creative Ventures course at London Business School. As a collaborator I play the role of composer, sound designer and experimental musician across different context; from contemporary dance and film to architecture and visual art installations. Since 2006 I have been presenting solo and collaborative work locally and internationally: The Second Yinchuan Biennale, China (2018), KLEX, Malaysia (2018), Singapore International Festival of the Arts (2017), National Gallery Singapore (2017), Saatchi Gallery, London (2013), Archifest Singapore (2014) with HCFA, Esplanade’s da:ns Festival (2013/2016) with Ming Poon / Emmanuèle Phuon & Amrita Performing Arts, Kalaa Utsavam (2017) with Chowk, Esplanade’s Sacred Music Festival (2010), Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (2014), Singapore Art Museum (2011), International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (2012) with Lucy Davis, IFA Gallery Berlin / Stuttgart, and the 52nd / 56th Venice Biennale (2007 / 2015) with Tang Da Wu and Charles Lim respectively.
